6-Week Basics of Oil Painting (Live Online Workshop)

Join Pragati Gunasekar, MFA from the New York Academy of Art and former Adjunct Faculty, for this 6-week online foundation course covering the essentials of oil painting through still life and landscape. Students will learn to compose and paint from their own still life setup, then apply those same fundamentals to landscape painting in the final two weeks. You'll learn a clear, step-by-step approach, no grid method, no tracing. Open to all skill levels.
 

Each week includes a live demonstration (recorded and available for replay), so you can follow along in real time or work at your own pace.
 

What you will learn:

• Building your own still life setup, object selection, arrangement, composition, and lighting

• Establishing the initial form and shape of your subject

• Scale, position, and proportions to achieve accurate structure

• Drawing, inking-in, and underpainting

• Study of light. Understanding shadows and highlights

• Color mixing. Understanding hue, value, and chroma

• Applying still life fundamentals to landscape painting (weeks 5–6)
   

Format:

• Weeks 1–4: Still life painting (from your own setup)

• Weeks 5–6: Landscape painting

• Weekly live online sessions with demonstrations

• Sessions recorded for replay if you miss a class

• Feedback on submitted work throughout the course

• Final group critique in week 6
   

Please note this workshop covers the basics of color theory and understanding, along with core oil painting techniques. The skills learned apply across genres — from still life and landscape to portraiture and figure painting.
