Portraiture in Oils
In-person Workshop
Oct 10 & 11 | 2-Day
2 to 5 pm IST

Have you ever struggled to create skin tones that are luminous and colorful when painting a portrait?
Do you want to paint believable portraits in oil, but don't know where to begin?
Join Pragati Gunasekar, MFA from the New York Academy of Art and former Adjunct Faculty, for this two-day workshop on painting the portrait in oil from a live model. You'll learn a clear, step-by-step approach to composing and painting a portrait, no grid method, no tracing. Open to all skill levels.
What you will learn:
-
Establishing the initial form and shape of the portrait
-
Scale, position, and proportions of the head, neck, and shoulders to achieve likeness
-
Drawing, inking-in, and underpainting
-
Study of light. Understanding shadows and highlights
-
Color mixing of flesh tones. Understanding hue, value, and chroma
-
Controlling oil colors to create a variety of skin tones
Please note this workshop will also cover basics like color theory and understanding, through demonstrations and lectures/discussions. While geared toward the painted portrait, the color knowledge gained applies to all genres — from landscape to figure painting.
